Dr. Alan Hirsch conducted an interesting study on the sale of Nike shoes, demonstrating how perfume could encourage purchase. He set up two completely identical rooms with the same shoes on display, the only difference being that a flowery scent was diffused in only one of the two. The results were unbelievable: 84 per cent of the participants stated that they preferred the shoes placed in the scented room, they also perceived them as more valuable and this predisposed them to spend around 10 dollars more.
There are hundreds of examples like this, so much so that in recent times, more and more companies and shops have focused on sensory marketing.
